ACE EPIC USFS (UT): Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest, Lead Range/Botany Technician
Summary: American Conservation Experience, a nonprofit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest is seeking one Lead Range/ Botany Technician for 11 weeks. This opportunity is intended for enthusiastic professionals with a background in Rangeland/Botany Management or a related field, with a deep interest in jointly advancing their career goals and the stewardship of Utah's natural resources through purposeful fieldwork and research.
The member will assist the Forest Service at the Heber-Kamas Ranger District. This opportunity will allow the Range/Botany Technician to work under the supervision and guidance of professional range and natural resource specialists performing a variety of duties related to invasive species management including Identifying invasive non-native plants using various field guides or botanical keys, surveys for target plants, collects and assesses data on infestation location and status, and treats invasive plant infestations. Treatments primarily involve using herbicides, but may also be accomplished by hand-pulling, and/or using hand tools, power tools, mowers, and other standardized control methods.
Collects and records data related to infestation location and status. Responsible for ensuring that data related to invasive non-native plant treatments is recorded accurately and legibly, and according to specific protocols.
Performs highly physical labor and daily hiking often to remote locations in rugged terrain under possible adverse weather conditions. Uses global positioning systems, aerial photographs, topographic maps, GIS and/or compass in navigation. A portion of time may be dedicated to data entry and other duties in an office setting.
Applies herbicides using backpack sprayers or other equipment on a regular basis according to specific guidelines. Performs basic mathematical calculations related to herbicide mixing and applications. Utilizes appropriate personal protective equipment supplied by the Forest Service at all times. May identify, collect, and release appropriate insects (biological control) to achieve desired objectives.
Occasionally assists with revegetation and ecological restoration projects related to wildlife, range, fisheries, and fuels.

The Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest is one of the 12 National Forests in the Intermountain Region as well as one of the urban National Forests in the Forest Service System. It covers an area that includes northern and north- central Utah, and southwestern Wyoming. This area also includes the largest population center within the State of Utah, which is known as the Wasatch Front. The Forest is heavily influenced and impacted from over a million people living in close proximity.
The Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest has a net acreage of 2,169,596 acres. It is divided into seven Ranger Districts: Salt Lake, Kamas/Heber, Ogden, Pleasant Grove, Spanish Fork, and Logan in Utah; adn Evanston/Mountain View in Wyoming. Scenic beauty on the Forest offers unlimited recreational opportunities throughout the year. Whether you enjoy skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling, hiking, mountain biking, camping, picnicking, fishing, boating, swimming, horseback riding, etc., you can find the recreational experience you are seeking. Because of the abundance of recreation opportunities and the large urban population along the Wasatch Front, the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest is one of the most heavily visited in the entire National Forest System.

Living Allowance: The members should anticipate serving 40 hours/wk and will receive a living allowance of $600/wk for food and incidentals, dispersed bi-weekly.
Housing: Housing is provided by the USFS at no cost to the member. Housing is near Strawberry Reservoir, approximately 25 miles from Heber City, UT.
Training Provided: This is a leadership role, and members will be expected to train team members in a variety of capacities. That being said, Leads will still have the opportunity to be mentored by Forest Service permanent staff in a variety of disciplines related to this role. Members can expect training and mentorship in landscape level planning, botany, invasive mitigation planning and techniques, horseback riding, data collection and reporting, among other things.

Qualifications: Applicants should have a degree in Range, Resource Management, Botany or relevant professional experiences in closely related fields.
