Overview

World Wildlife Fund (WWF), one of the world's leading conservation organization, seeks a Program Manager for our Sustainable Ranching Initiative at our Northern Great Plains (NGP) Program office in Bozeman, MT office. The Program Manager will oversee the Sustainable Ranching Initiative in the NGP with the goal of avoiding the conversion of grasslands to croplands across the region by enhancing the environmental, economic, and social viability of grass-based enterprises. This entails developing and maintaining relationships with landowners, as well as engaging with other public and private sector partners, to accelerate improved management on ranchlands, support rural communities, and enhance a grass-based economy. The Program Manager will do this by: leading a team of 2-4 employees; developing and prioritizing strategies to meet the program's objectives; measuring progress toward program goals; designing and implementing a variety of programs focused on improving ranch management (environmentally, economically, and socially); developing and scaling financial solutions to maintain grass-based enterprises; and maintaining and building community resilience.

Responsibilities

  • Leads a team of 2-4 staff members, including developing, implementing, and regularly evaluating strategies, work plans, budgets, and timelines. Ensures results are delivered on time and within budgetary guidelines.
  • Leads a team that implements ranch planning across the region, including designing trainings and workshops, hiring partner positions, recruiting participants, and tracking progress and results. Responsible for demonstrating measurable improvements in carbon, water, and biodiversity indicators due to improved management practices.
  • Responsible for strengthening the capacity of local, landowner-led groups by developing innovative solutions to landowner problems, including financial tools that maintain a grass-based economy, in coordination with a variety of partners.
  • Identifies new partners to broaden the reach and enhance the durability of the program. Influences partners to work toward a common goal of a strengthened grass-based economy.
  • Works across the conservation space and coordinates with relevant partners and programs in the beef supply chain.

Qualifications

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Graduate degree in one of the following fields: Rangeland Management, Biology, Conservation Biology, or Ecology

  • 8 years of experience in rangeland management and conservation of biodiversity.

  • Deep familiarity of ecological/conservation principles, including proven experience with scaling implementation of changed management practices to achieve conservation outcomes with landowners.

  • Experience managing complex projects, and many projects at once, including managing staff, budgets, workplans, timelines, and tracking metrics.

  • Strong fundraising skills, including excellent skills in writing/editing proposals, setting goals and objectives, and developing budgets and timelines.
  • Experience supervising staff, including developing work plans, providing feedback and managing performance, and providing leadership to a team.
  • Experience developing and maintaining partnerships with a variety of partners, including landowners, non-profits, government agencies, indigenous communities, and funders.
  • Willingness to travel as necessary, which may be up to 25-50%.

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Knowledge of Northern Great Plains ecoregion preferred.
  • Knowledge of and comfort with financial tools that help sustain ranching and/or disrupt the status quo.
  • Connections across the beef/ranching space, including with the conservation and finance sectors.
  • Willingness and ability to think outside the box, be innovative, and work with ranchers across the spectrum.

  • Ability to think strategically and to incorporate input from a variety of stakeholders, collaborators, and fellow staff members.

  • Excellent communication skills, both one-on-one and in a group setting.

  • Ability to take initiative and facilitate the work of others.

  • Experience managing external consultants/contractors.

  • Cross-cultural experience appreciated.
