AFT’s California Agricultural Stewardship Program Manager (ASPM) plays an integral role in program development and delivery. The ASPM is responsible for the management of existing complex multi-benefit projects throughout California with a primary focus on agricultural stewardship programming components of AFT’s San Joaquin Land and Water Strategy.
As an integral part of the California program strategy team, the ASPM, interacts directly with partners and stakeholders and works closely with California and national AFT staff members to help increase the pace and scale of program development and implementation, and oversee the completion of a suite of high-impact land protection and regenerative agriculture programs.
What You’ll Be Working On
•Oversight and identification of a portfolio of high-impact land protection and associated conservation projects that advance strategic objectives of the California program
•Collaboration with AFT’s Land Protection and Farm Legacy divisions to use the full range of farmland protection tools including fee simple and conservation easement purchase and gifts.
•Lead coordination on the San Joaquin Valley Conservation Collaborative including regenerative agriculture project prioritization criteria development, project implementation oversight, partnership outreach planning and relationship management.
•Informing decision making with extensive knowledge of California agricultural land stewardship landscape
•Provide technical expertise on a broad range of agricultural stewardship projects including groundwater recharge and infiltration practices, soil health management, and other related conservation practices.
•Leadership role in facilitating agricultural stewardship programs and project development, funding, implementation and evaluation on a large scale
•Collaboration with the Development division and other AFT staff on development of compelling proposals to secure funds for priority agricultural stewardship programs and projects
•Providing input on reporting to funders and AFT leadership
•Supervision and mentorship of staff to ensure high quality work and accountability with workplans and budgets. Oversight of recruiting, performance reviews, staff deployment/workload balancing, and career progression with related internal communications and budgeting/finance duties.
•Contribute to the California program’s vision and strategy, short- and long- term goals and objectives
•Development of thought leadership around specific topics/emerging practice areas, collaborate with AFT policy and scientific experts as needed.
•Share in knowledge dissemination, reporting, and communications, internally and externally. Represent AFT in industry-group conferences, professional associations, and other public venues.

•Excellent computer proficiency (MS Office – Word, Excel and Outlook)
•Must be able to work under pressure and meet deadlines, while maintaining a positive attitude and providing exemplary customer service
•Ability to work independently and to carry out assignments to completion within parameters of instructions given, prescribed routines, and standard accepted practices.
Education & Experience
•Bachelor’s degree in sustainable agriculture, natural sciences, natural resource management or policy, water resources or related field. Master’s degree a plus.
•7+ years’ experience with program management, including direct staff supervision, client management, program development and implementation and budget oversight.
It is highly preferred that the position be telework and based in the San Joaquin Valley where a significant portion of program work will take place. The secondary location of preference is AFT’s California office in Sacramento. Travel required for this position is approximately 20%; primarily local depending on residence.
