Summary: American Conservation Experience, a nonprofit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the National Park Service is seeking two Interpretation and Education Members who will welcome visitors to the historic home and grounds of Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site.

Start Date: May 23, 2021 (there may be flexibility for the right candidate)

End Date: August 14, 2021 or 12 weeks after start date

*a 12-week minimum commitment is required *

Location: Flat Rock, NC

Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site (CARL) is located in western North Carolina about 30 minutes southeast of Asheville, NC. The site is the last home of Carl Sandburg (1878 - 1967), poet, biographer, folk singer, social activist, and Pulitzer Prize-winning author. His wife and family raised champion dairy goats; the park continues to maintain a small herd. The 264-acre park features an historic home, barn and outbuildings and over five miles of wooded trails.

Living Allowance: ACE Member is expected to contribute ~40 hours/week and will receive a living allowance of $480/week to offset the costs of food, housing, and incidental expenses, dispersed bi-weekly.

Housing: Housing is the responsibility of the member and not provided by ACE or NPS. The member will have a $100/week housing allowance.

Position Description:

The ACE Members will directly assist the National Park Service engage the public in the history and significance of Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site to visitors. Members will share information and meanings behind natural cultural resources, as well provide other visitor services such as staffing the visitor center, collecting tour fees, issuing park passes, and driving the visitor shuttle. They will also care for the farm's goats.

Typical duties include:

  1. Staffing the visitor center desks, collecting fees, and selling Sandburg-related sales items in the park store
  2. Creating and presenting formal interpretive programs to a variety of audiences
  3. Leading tours of the historic Sandburg home
  4. Driving the visitor shuttle
  5. Assisting in education programs
  6. Caring for goats at the farm area of the park including raking manure and feeding

This individual placement is meant to facilitate professional development and promotes exposure to land management agencies and networking with professionals. This could include gaining experience in different conservation fields and shadowing different work groups.

Personal Vehicle: Grocery stores, banks, pharmacies, libraries, and other infrastructure are spread out by 5 miles or more. Members must have a driver's license and a personal vehicle for personal commuting purposes.

Schedule: The members will be expected to work full-time, 40-hours/week, approximately 9am to 5:30pm, including holidays and weekends.

Qualifications:

  • Willing and able to represent ACE and the partner organization in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner.
  • Ability to be both self-directed/work alone, and be a positive, contributing member of a group.
  • This position is funded through the Public Land Corps Act which has specific program requirements.
    • Must be 21-30 years of age to apply (members must be 21+ to apply for an ACE position that requires or anticipates operation of agency or ACE vehicles for duties).
    • Military Veterans up to 35 are encouraged to apply.
  • US Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • A valid driver's license and an insurable driving record (documentation to be provided upon request).
  • Willing to undergo and must pass required criminal history checks.
  • Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Must be able and willing to work outdoors, in varying weather conditions, and capable of participating in physical labor.
  • Must have effective communication skills with diverse audiences
  • Applicants should have at least two years of study above the high school level that includes coursework in areas such as history, social science, natural science, drama, and/or public speaking.

Preferred:

  • Knowledge and skills in the principles of customer service.
  • A strong demonstrated interest and/or education in the field of natural and cultural resources.
  • Excellent public speaking skills.
  • Bilingual applicants are encouraged and welcome
