Context: The Sierra Club is the largest and oldest grassroots environmental organization in the country. We are seeking an Online Organizer to craft and execute a Dirty Fuels Campaign online organizing strategy for regional projects, which includes developing an active, online network of Club members and supporters engaged in the campaign. The Online Organizer for the Dirty Fuels campaign will advise and help craft appropriate digital strategies specifically to reach out to and grow the Club’s engagement of frontline communities and communities of color. They will work with appropriate campaign staff to use Club’s online data, web, mobile and email systems to drive the strategy and further advance the goals of the campaign and to make the Sierra Club a more inclusive place for everyone.

Scope: As an Online Organizer you will plan, strategize, and implement the online education and mobilization efforts of specific campaign projects. You will also access Club database systems to assess results, build data files, and target online organizing strategies. Not only that, but you will also coordinate editing, writing, researching and developing online web pages, mobile strategies, and action alerts to support the campaign. You are the kind of person that is not only tech savvy but an expert on social media, and will provide training and instruction on the best use of social media and other newly emerging online tools to help engage the Sierra Club online supporter base in the campaign.

In this role you will typically:

  1. Work with others to devise and recommend a plan and strategy for the Dirty Fuels Campaign and its online organizing work in specific regions of the country in conjunction with the overall Sierra Club strategy for those campaigns.
  2. Organize, develop, and coordinate online email outreach, web-based advocacy, and online-to-offline integration of the members and supporters who are interested in the Dirty Fuels Campaign.
  3. Recommend and implement rapid response plans for the Dirty Fuels Campaign.
  4. Use Club integrated email/web/constituent relationship management system to develop segmented lists, track and report results, target emails, and link to appropriate web pages.
  5. Travel to organize and coordinate training events, strategy sessions, field meetings, visibility events, or other large events and conferences.
  6. Communicate directly with members of the Dirty Fuels Campaign and online network, including writing and editing content, responding to questions, forwarding inquiries to other staff or volunteers, and providing a high level of customer service for the online network.
  7. Participate in developing a strategy and implementing an integrated Dirty Fuels Campaign presence on existing social networking sites as well as the campaign’s specific web-presence.
  8. Create culturally competent digital strategies to grow and engage frontline communities on email, social media, mobile, and on new emerging platforms.
  9. Develop new relationships or leverage existing relationships in the digital space to help further the goals of the campaign.
  10. Perform miscellaneous duties as directed.

You will be successful in this role if you have:

  • 2-3+ years experience in online organizing or campaigning.
  • A deep passion for racial, environmental, and social justice, including the ability to speak to, understand, and connect issues surrounding racial equity and inclusion, and environmental justice.
  • A strong background in advocacy or political campaign organizing.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to enhance a culture of collaboration, openness, trust, equity, and inclusion all while supporting the Dirty Fuels campaign.
  • Proficient computer skills and prior experience or aptitude with internet applications including email, constituent relationship management or other related data systems, social networking systems, mobile platforms and web applications.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills, particularly in writing and production of online campaign materials, including the ability to make complex ideas more accessible.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills; a willingness to push through barriers and bounce back from setbacks with creative and new ideas in order to meet goals.
  • The ability to be flexible in your work and priorities ; being able to work independently and have a self-driven work ethic but also being able to connect with others to share ideas and feedback in order to problem solve.
  • Strong interpersonal and tech skills and the ability to use those skills to train staff and volunteers effectively on email, social media, and mobile best practices.

Other skills that may be helpful for this role but are not required include:

  • CRM, email, and Salesforce experience within a campaign.
  • Knowledge of oil and gas and fighting pipelines.
  • Digital storytelling/graphic skills and experience, specifically a graphic design background.
  • Experience working across lines of race and class ; an already made connection with the progressive community digital spaces and forums.
  • Bilingual (Spanish or others).

This position is represented by a collective bargaining unit and is subject to the terms and conditions of the contract between Sierra Club and Progressive Workers Union or Sierra Employee Alliance, depending on location
