Summary : American Conservation Experience, a Non-Profit Conservation Corps in partnership with Grand Canyon National Park, is seeking ONE Vegetation Management Member to dedicate 26 weeks directly with the Grand Canyon vegetation staff exploring the field of vegetation management. This opportunity is intended for enthusiastic, beginning professionals who are interested in learning more about site restoration, plant material collections, plant propagation, and nursery management.

Location : Grand Canyon National Park South Rim, Arizona. Living locations
are at high elevation (South Rim 6860 ft.). Summer on the South Rim is
pleasant with temperatures reaching 80F and frequent afternoon thunderstorms.
Winter can be cold with occasional snow storms. Be prepared for all elements
when living at the Grand Canyon - snow, rain, heat, drought, etc.
Living Allowance : The ACE Member is expected to contribute ~40 hours/week
and will receive a living allowance of $400/week to offset the costs of food
and incidental expenses, dispersed bi-weekly. The member will also receive a
$600 relocation reimbursement and a $165 gear allowance reimbursement.
Housing : The ACE member will be accommodated in provided park housing at no
cost for the duration of the term.
AmeriCorps : This position may be eligible for a 900-hour ($3,097.50)
AmeriCorps Education Award upon successful completion of service hours.
Additional enrollment and volunteer service is required.
Project Background and Objectives : The Grand Canyon National Park Native
Plant Nursery supports all habitat restoration work within Grand Canyon
National Park and serves as a regional native plant resource. The member will
gain knowledge and hands-on experience in a variety of tasks including
implementing habitat restoration actions in highly visited maintained
landscapes. These restoration efforts will require seed collection and
propagation of native species to support wildlife habitat. The member will
conduct seed collection on the South Rim of Grand Canyon, assist in
propagating plants at the native plant nursery and conduct site maintenance
and monitoring at restoration sites.
The Grand Canyon National Park Vegetation Program is a multifaceted program designed to protect, restore, and maintain the ecological stability within the Park's boundaries. The ACE member will assist the NPS by supporting the nursery and restoration efforts that focus on providing food and cover for sought after mammals and birds by establishing native trees, shrubs, grasses and forbs in degraded areas.
The main objectives of the Native Plant Nursery are to propagate native plants for restoration projects throughout Grand Canyon National Park. Crew members collect seed and cuttings from over 120 different plant species. The Nursery crew propagates over 10,000 plants annually and holds over 30,000 plants at the Nursery facility. These actions support wildlife habitat by providing native plant species to restore areas that are degraded by high visitor use and result in providing aesthetically pleasing visitor use areas that attract wildlife.
Position Description : The ACE member will implement habitat restoration
management actions, with a focus on maintaining and producing plant material
for plant restoration projects. The member will carry out native plant
propagation and care activities as directed by the park's native plant nursery
manager. The member will learn native plant production, plant care, and seed
collection techniques, gain experience with high elevation desert restoration
and horticulture techniques, and help manage greenhouse, shade house, and
outdoor facilities. The member will learn how to identify common native and
non-native plants of the Colorado Plateau and will learn invasive plant
management and data collection techniques.
Duties include but aren't necessarily limited to:
- Habitat restoration site monitoring and maintenance
- Maintenance of outdoor growing fields
- Caring for plants through the judicious use of fertilization, pruning, exotic species management, and supplemental plantings
- Collection of native plant materials including seed and cuttings
- Cleaning and treating seed for propagation and storage
- Propagating plants from seeds
Public Land Corps Hiring Authority : Members serving under this agreement
may be eligible for a hiring authority upon completion of their term of
service. Eligible members must meet standard requirements of completing at
least 640 hours and utilize their certificate before the age of 30.
Qualifications
Required:
- Willing and able to represent ACE and the partner organization in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner.
- Ability to be both self-directed/work alone, and be a positive, contributing member of a group.
- This position is funded through the Public Land Corps Act which has specific program requirements:
- Must be 18-30 years of age to apply (members must be 21+ to apply for an ACE position that requires or anticipates operation of agency or ACE vehicles for duties).
- Military Veterans up to 35 are encouraged to apply.

- A valid driver's license and an insurable driving record (documentation to be provided upon request).
- Willing to undergo and must pass required criminal history checks.
- Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
Preferred:
- Member who is currently seeking or has recently completed a bachelor's degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related discipline appropriate to the position.
