Overview

World Wildlife Fund (WWF), one of the world's leading conservation organizations, seeks a Director, Conservation Evidence.

Major Function

The Director, Conservation Evidence serves as WWF's lead scientific expert and strategist on the generation, synthesis and use of evidence in conservation decision-making. S/he is responsible for the development, implementation and refinement of a strategic scientific portfolio that advances the evidence base for conservation, informs decision-making and contributes to learning that advances WWF Network outcomes. S/he commissions, and leads research and analysis on select conservation interventions; acts as a lead technical adviser to WWF's Global Practices and WWF-US's Goal teams on opportunities for the generation of evidence, and its integration into decision-making; and leverages internal and external networks to provide thought leadership on evidence-based conservation across the sector.

Responsibilities

  • Develops and implements WWF's evidence strategy to ensure that WWF's goals are grounded in and informed by robust evidence on the social and ecological outcomes of conservation interventions
  • Conducts, commissions and leverages cutting-edge research on the generation, synthesis and use of evidence in conservation to ensure WWF strategies are informed by evidence, and WWF is recognized as a thought-leader in evidence-based conservation interventions
  • Advance the use of systems-thinking methodologies to design initiatives within WWF
  • Manages science staff and collaborators to implement WWF's evidence and systems strategy, and ultimately advance WWF's conservation priorities
  • Leads and supports research proposals for strategic priorities, with assistance from senior management and development staff, to finance the strategic evidence portfolio, and where appropriate, broader science priorities
  • Builds and maintains an extensive network of science professionals and partnerships in the conservation sector, and related fields (e.g., public health, development) to foster and leverage strategic collaboration, advancing WWF's goals.
  • Represents WWF in scientific meetings, peer-reviewed publications and other forums as WWF's lead expert on Conservation Evidence, to promote WWF's conservation goals, activities and thought leadership in conservation
    Qualifications

    • 10+ years with an advanced degree a discipline in environmental science or related field
    • Ability to effectively prioritize and produce high-quality work under time constraints
    • Excellent organizational and project leadership skills
    • Proven ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a matrixed team environment
    • Strong project management skills
    • Ability to operate with independence, under pressure, and to meet deadlines and commitments
    • Excellent interpersonal skills requiring knowing when to use courtesy, tact and/or diplomacy to effectively communicate with all constituents
    • Ability to operate with independence, under pressure, to meet deadlines and commitments
