Living Allowance: The ACE Member is expected to contribute ~40 hours/week and will receive a living allowance of $800/week to offset the costs of food and incidental expenses, dispersed bi-weekly.
Housing: ACE member will be accommodated in dormitory style park housing that is available at no cost for the duration of the term.
ACE member will need to use their own vehicle for transportation to and from NPS headquarters building, which is a distance of roughly 16 miles from dormitory.
Scheduling: ACE Member will generally work ~40 hours/week and will have the option of working 8-hour days, five days per week OR 9-hour days with every other Friday off. For either schedule, work will begin at 8 am. The ACE Member will follow the authorized schedule of NPS staff, which consists of a 30-minute lunch break and two 15-minute breaks throughout the day.
Position Description:
The ACE member will receive professional field experience and exposure to the archaeological/cultural resource program at the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area (SMMNRA). For the duration of the internship, they will be joining professional National Park Service (NPS) archaeologists in conducting fieldwork at various prehistoric (Chumash, Tongva, and Tatavium) and historic archaeological resource locations throughout the park to meet the park’s needs.
The ACE Member will be splitting time between conducting archaeological surveys in the field and compiling data to draft archaeological site records and reports in the office at the NPS headquarters in Thousand Oaks, CA. Additionally, the intern will have some opportunities to conduct preliminary historical research to supplement the archeological information. Work in the office is somewhat sedentary, while fieldwork is more physically demanding. Archaeological survey usually involves hiking with a backpack through scenic areas of the park that sometimes include hilly and rugged terrain.

This individual placement is meant to facilitate professional development and promotes exposure to land management agencies and networking with professionals. This could include gaining experience in different conservation fields and shadowing different work groups.
Public Land Corps Hiring Authority: Members serving under this agreement may be eligible for a hiring authority upon completion of their term of service.
