Who We Are: Friends of the Earth (FOE) is a national not for profit environmental organization that strives for a healthier and more just world. We push for the reforms that are needed. It’s an approach that has worked for five decades to produce important victories that help protect our planet and its people. We’re part of Friends of the Earth International, a federation of groups working in more than 70 countries on today’s most urgent environmental and social issues.
Our new Climate and Agriculture Finance Program aims to combat the climate crisis and biodiversity loss by shifting public development and private finance away from industrial livestock and commodity feed production towards more sustainable and equitable food production. The program seeks to achieve meaningful and absolute emission reductions from animal agribusiness by exposing big meat and dairy greenwashing and pressuring governments and the finance sector to develop stronger policies, including bold GHG emission reduction targets and full GHG emission disclosure requirements.
What We Look For: Are you passionate about developing and leading effective and hard-hitting, justice-centered strategies and campaigns to shift private and public development finance away from industrial livestock and chemical-intensive agriculture? Are you able to oversee and lead the strategic vision of the Climate and Agriculture Finance program? Are you skilled at raising money and cultivating donors? Can you oversee corporate finance policy, organizing, research and strategic communications that will help to expose corporate greenwashing, highlight social justice concerns, and secure meaningful corporate climate commitments?
If so, this is the position for you. We want you to succeed and we want to pay you a competitive wage that is in line with your experience. The salary range for this full-time remote role (preferably in the Washington, DC area) is $92,000-$100,000. Offers are determined based on relevant skills and experience required for the position.
Who You Are:
Transformational and Authentic Leader: Lead policy work related to climate change and agriculture finance, including policy engagement efforts with governments, private banks, asset managers, and International Financial Institutions (IFIs) like the World Bank, the IFC and Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) Invest. Manage and lead internal and external campaign priorities and processes, manage staff, develop campaign and communication plans and fundraising proposals. Cultivate relationships with donors and foundations.
Relationship Builder: Works well with coalition partners to develop effective international campaigns geared towards achieving meaningful corporate climate commitments and securing policies at financial institutions that exclude investments in industrial livestock companies and related activities. Work with Friends of the Earth’s International Forests program to identify and explore new opportunities and strategies for shifting private finance away from industrial livestock. Work with colleagues and coalition partners on outreach and organizing to amplify voices of groups in Latin America and other regions who are directly impacted by industrial agriculture.
Results Oriented: Produce materials (e.g. policy reports and memos, case studies, op-eds, citizen petitions and sign on letters) that challenge the dominant narrative that we need industrial agriculture to feed the world and that net zero commitments are effective for reaching global climate targets. Build the counter narrative around meaningful solutions and re-direct financing and policy support towards climate-friendly, small and mid-scale agroecological food systems. Develop and implement a fundraising plan, foundation proposals and membership materials.
Collaborative Communicator: Develop and implement effective communications and campaign strategies, including online and offline organizing, traditional and social media, press monitoring and outreach and narrative development with support from Friends of the Earth’s communications and digital membership teams.
