Scope: Plans, directs, implements, and coordinates a full suite of Sierra Club clean energy initiatives to move beyond fossil fuels in Minnesota. Collaborates with various internal departments and programs, partner organizations, and volunteer leadership to ensure execution of strategic coordinated community, state, and regional campaigns and manages daily operation of these campaigns. Ensures strategic alignment of campaigns with regional and national goals and objectives. Creates and executes campaign work plans and revises plans as appropriate to meet changing needs and requirements. Identifies resources needed and assigns individual responsibilities. Prepares and submits weekly progress reports. Represents the Sierra Club to government officials, the media, business and community leaders, allies and other organizations, and to the public.

Job activities include but are not limited to:

1. Directs Sierra Club’s full suite of campaign efforts in Minnesota to move from dirty to clean energy. Develops and implements strategic campaigns in collaboration with Sierra Club’s Environmental Law Program, Organizing Department, State Chapters, Communications Department, Digital Strategies, capacities and programs, and volunteer leadership. Provides ancillary support for coordinated campaigns in North and South Dakota.
2. In collaboration with state teams, engages key players in decarbonizing the electric and building sectors. Supports and works with strategic partners in frontline communities, with labor, and elected and appointed decision makers to assure advancement of Sierra Club’s priorities.
3. Supports and provides professional expertise to staff and volunteers. Provides conservation training and motivation to staff and volunteers.
4. Implements Sierra Club best practices regarding the Jemez Principles for Democratic Organizing, justice, equity, and inclusion. Works to develop and ensure that volunteers and partners assume meaningful roles in the campaign.
5. Works with the Communications Department and Chapters to support media outreach activities related to the campaign. Serves as a Sierra Club spokesperson to media outlets and promotes volunteer media exposure.
6. Writes, edits, and reviews educational and advocacy materials.
7. Represents the Sierra Club to the general public and to strategic allies.
8. Introduces creative ideas and approaches; fosters creativity among team members.
9. Handles miscellaneous projects and duties as assigned.

The successful candidate must have the following skills and experience:

• Ability to work independently as well as participate and lead in a team across a complex and large scope of responsibility.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships based on mutual respect and accountability.
• Ability to collaboratively design and implement highly strategic, high-impact campaigns that integrate field and online organizing, communications, and legal strategies and tactics.
• Highly developed communication skills, with a focus on communicating effectively across different groups of stakeholders, internally and externally.
• Equity Analysis and Practice. You are aware of your group identities and how they have shaped your life and experiences at work. You have an analysis of how racism and other forms of oppression in society impact relationships, systems and culture. You bring experience and skills for working effectively with colleagues across group identities and position/role.

The strongest candidates will also demonstrate the following experience, skills and competencies:

• Familiarity with climate policy, especially energy sector policies.
• Experience working closely with organizers, as an organizer, or working with volunteers.
• Experience effectively navigating complex organizational systems, structures, and dynamics.
• Patience, strong emotional intelligence, humility and demonstrated ability to create rapport and inspire trust.

Compensation and Benefits

The salary for this position is $73,295.

This position is represented by a collective bargaining unit and is subject to the terms and conditions of the contract between Sierra Club and Progressive Workers Union.

The Sierra Club offers a competitive salary package commensurate with skills and experience plus excellent benefits that include medical, dental, and vision coverage, and a retirement savings 401(k) plan.

This is a category 3 exempt, represented position.
