POSITION SUMMARY* *
The Sustainability Program Intern will support sustainability and environmental activities at the Department of Public Utilities. The intern will contribute towards ongoing initiatives and programs that are focused on increasing residents and neighborhoods resiliency. These activities will include community engagement and outreach, research on best sustainability practices that other communities have implemented and can be adopted by the City of Toledo. The intern will have the opportunity to interact with professionals in both public and private practice as well as community activist and researchers who are advancing sustainability in our community.


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Assist with promoting Community Garden Water Program.
  • Assist with promoting trees planting to increase tree canopy and reduce urban heat islands.
  • Assist with collecting data for Carbon Disclosure Project.
  • Assembles research findings in a way to easily communicate to our community.
  • Researches existing sustainability case studies and project from communities similar to City of Toledo to help track progress towards goals of the Sustainability Action Plan.
  • Assist with division air and water projects if needed.
  • Participate in technical research and resource gathering on a variety of sustainability efforts to include urban heat island, water and habitat conservation, urban food, energy and public education.
  • Participate in special projects and grant funded projects, collaborating with neighborhood groups, other city departments and the general public.
  • Identify case studies and programs in other communities that can be implemented in Toledo.
  • Research.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of:

  • Microsoft Word.

Skill in:

  • Oral and written communication.

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Currently enrolled in Engineering, Biology, Environmental Sciences, Geography or Sociology programs.
