NEIWPCC is seeking a seasonal intern to assist the Hudson River stewardship and restoration team in the field and office during the summer of 2023. This intern will gain experience in a variety of habitat restoration activities, including shoreline stabilization and invasive species management.
What You’ll Do
As an intern for NEIWPCC, you’ll work alongside full-time staff to assess, protect, manage, and restore priority Hudson River Estuary habitats, including shorelines, tidal wetlands, and submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) beds. You will also help assess and map reserve habitats and natural resources and support water quality, sediment, vegetation, fish, and wildlife monitoring efforts. You will conduct outreach and help coordinate volunteer activities, assist with data entry and analysis, prepare environmental permit applications, coordinate with land management partners, and develop stewardship content and updates for the reserve website. You will also have the opportunity to assist other programs, including research, education, and estuary training. For all tasks, ample training will be provided. Responsibilities will be delegated with the goal of developing the intern’s skillsets and knowledge to provide a valuable, early-career experience.
What You Bring / Preferred Qualifications
The successful candidate will have a passion and interest in preserving and advancing water quality. Ideally the candidate will have demonstrated interest in ecology, biology, or related field, and an interest in responsible management of upland and coastal resources while applying the best available science to maintain and restore healthy, productive, and resilient ecosystems. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, a commitment to equality and inclusion, and the ability to respectfully engaging with a diverse team of collaborators is essential. Candidates must be comfortable working in the field, able to swim, and physically capable of lifting up to 50 lbs. Knowledge of boater safety and experience paddling canoes and kayaks will be beneficial. Highly motivated individuals with knowledge of the flora, fauna, and habitats of the Hudson River Valley are encouraged to apply.
Logistics* *
This is a seasonal NEIWPCC internship based out of NYSDEC’s Hudson River National Estuarine Research Reserve Headquarters at Norrie Point Environmental Center located in Staatsburg, NY. Position requires frequent day trips throughout the Hudson River Estuary, occasionally working under adverse conditions in outdoor settings. Evening and weekend work may be required in order to collect and process samples. This position is not eligible for telework. A valid driver’s license and access to own transportation is required. Proof of COVID-19 vaccination required.
Pay
The Anticipated hourly payrate for this position is $15-$17.
