American Conservation Experience, a nonprofit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the National Park Service, is seeking ONE Signs and Graffiti Fellow to contribute to fabricating and installing new trail signs and assist with trail maintenance to provide better visitor orientation and access to park trails alongside NPS Staff.

Location Details/Description: Joshua Tree National Park, Twentynine Palms, CA


Joshua Tree National Park encompasses nearly 800,00 acres in southern California. Joshua Tree is situated in the Mojave Desert and the Colorado Desert we generally have mild winters with occasional rain or snowstorms. In the summertime the greater Joshua Tree area reaches temperatures well over 100 degrees. In the winter, spring and fall times Joshua Tree provides excellent opportunities for rock climbing and wilderness exploration. The nearby towns of Twentynine Palms and Yucca Valley have all services like groceries, libraries, etc. Palm Springs has bigger city amenities 45 minutes away. Los Angeles and Las Vegas are both about 3 hours away. We're located only a few hours from the California coast and about 3 hours from the Mexican border with the state of Baja California Norte.

Dark night skies, a rich cultural history, and surreal geologic features add to the wonder of this vast wilderness in southern California.

Position Overview: The park is currently experiencing a dramatic increase in the number of visitors. Park managers along with the parks interpretive media team have a project to improve our parks interpretive wayside informational media panels. This position will work with the park's sign designer and assist with installing wayside exhibits along the park’s roadways.


The ACE Fellow will be trained in basic ArcGIS and other software to aid in sign design and fabrication, as well as record keeping for the park’s GIS database. Other supplemental duties will include trail maintenance and repairs, trail condition assessments, assisting NPS staff with trail structure building, and other maintenance tasks. The ACE Fellow should be prepared for a variety of climatic and environmental extremes and conditions during the term of service.


This individual placement is meant to facilitate professional development and promotes exposure to land management agencies and networking with professionals. This could include gaining experience in different conservation fields and shadowing different work groups.


Schedule: Each ACE member is expected to work a schedule of 4, 10-hour days a week. The work week is Monday- Thursday from 6am - 4:30pm.

Position Benefits


Living Allowance: The ACE Fellow is expected to contribute ~40 hours/week and will receive a living allowance of $771.60 a week to help offset the costs of housing, food, and incidental expenses, dispersed bi-weekly.


Reimbursable Gear Allowance: ACE members will have up to $400 to spend on eligible gear purchases. Eligible gear for this position will be outlined upon hire and must be approved by ACE staff prior to purchase.


Public Land Corps Hiring Authority: Members serving under this agreement may be eligible for a federal hiring authority upon completion of their term of service. PLC projects also include specific eligibility requirements such as age and citizenship. Housing: ACE members will be accommodated in provided park housing at $335 per month for the duration of the term.


Provided Training/Orientation: ACE members will receive position specific training and an orientation outlining ACE policies and procedures, clear guidance on prohibited activities, and networks for support.
