At the Port of Seattle, we anticipate making salary offers between the minimum
and midpoint of the salary range. Offers will be based on experience similar
to the Port job being applied for as well as a review of pay rates for Port
employees performing similar work. Salary ranges are under review and subject
to change.
Some of what you’ll be doing:
Climate change is the challenge of our lifetime, and the Port of Seattle (the
Port) is committed to leading groundbreaking and innovative environmental
initiatives to become the greenest, most energy efficient Port in North
America. In this position, you will support the Port’s Maritime Environment &
Sustainability Department’s (ME&S) efforts to reduce maritime air pollution
and greenhouse gas emissions by leading a new maritime building audit program.
You will manage building audits and other building investigations across the
Port’s diverse portfolio of waterfront buildings and facilities and identify
efficiency opportunities and inform sustainability improvements. You will also
work on other projects or programs that support the Port’s building-related
sustainability goals. You will work on a team and across Port departments,
with other agencies, and with a wide variety of stakeholders, including
portfolio managers, facility managers, maintenance, and trade workers,
building tenants, and others to investigate, document, and inform strategies
to achieve the Port’s goals.
- You will be responsible for building energy audits and other environmental investigations across the Port’s diverse portfolio of owned and leased buildings and facilities.
- You will identify and document technical and operational information, identify energy reduction and sustainability opportunities, and develop recommendations for improvements.
- You will conduct the audits needed to comply with City of Seattle and Washington state building energy requirements, specifically Seattle’s Building Tune Up and Building Emissions Performance Standard and the Washington Clean Buildings Performance Standard and inform the actions needed to achieve the Port’s strategic goals.
- You will generate audit reports to document findings and recommendations and reporting needed to achieve compliance with city and state law
- You will support building condition assessments, conduct commissioning, and retro-commissioning, and work with facility managers and asset managers to document building conditions and options for sustainability improvements.
- You will be responsible for lighting audits of interior and exterior spaces across waterfront properties, manage utility rebates, and support project managers in various elements of project delivery.
- You use building investigations to support other sustainability goals identified in the Port’s Sustainable Evaluation Framework policy.
- You will work to support implementation the Port’s Maritime Climate and Air Action Plan (MCAAP), the Port’s Sustainable Evaluation Framework policy (SEF) and the development and implementation of the Seattle Waterfront Clean Energy Strategy (SWCES) and other related strategies and planning efforts.
- You will work as part of a team, collaborate with other Port staff and consultant teams, maintain relationships with stakeholders and lead meetings and presentations.
- You will have broad exposure to other Port work projects, opportunities to apply creative thinking and innovative approaches, and to grow professionally.
Who you are:
- Experienced – You have five (5) years of experience conducting building energy audits, commissioning and/or experience operating commercial or industrial buildings, advanced technical experience conducting, and planning American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) level 1, 2, and 3 building energy audits. You have an advanced knowledge of energy efficiency and sustainability strategies for buildings, and you have completed at least five (5) ASHRAE Level 2 or 3 Energy Audits.
- Educated – You possess a Bachelor’s degree in building science, green building, engineering, architecture, or related fields and certification(s) needed to qualify as a “Seattle Building Tune Up Specialist” and as a Washington Clean Building Performance Standard “Qualified Energy Auditor”. The list of the certifications is included in the application questionnaire.
- Desired – We hope you also have a Master’s degree in building science, green building, engineering, architecture, or related fields and/or and seven (7) years of experience and advanced understanding of building energy efficiency and decarbonization principles, demonstrated ability to lead ASHRAE level 1-3 audits, experience with high performance mechanical system design, and energy modeling for building energy use optimization. We hope you also have some knowledge of Seattle and Washington energy codes and laws.
- Project Manager – You are organized, detail-oriented, and have experience managing or implementing complex projects where you demonstrated your successful ability to coordinate, support, or manage multi-disciplinary staff and consultants.
- Scientifically-Minded – You are knowledgeable about climate science, energy management or policy, or green building, and you are highly skilled in gathering, analyzing, and leveraging data to inform decision-making. You also have some knowledge of low and zero carbon energy sources, environmental analyses related to buildings.
- Data Focused – You have experience collecting, organizing, analyzing, and interpreting data, strong problem-solving skills, and familiarity with data management software, such as MS Excel.
- Problem-Solver – You creatively investigate problems and opportunities, and can recommend feasible, actionable strategies, approaches, or solutions. You are open-minded about how to solve problems and are willing to apply new approaches to your work.
- Effective Communicator – You can communicate complex or technical issues clearly and succinctly to a wide variety of audiences, including to leadership and the public.
- Collaborator – You are comfortable working as part of a team, sharing ideas, and leveraging the expertise of those around you to advance your work. This also includes building strong rapports and relations inside and outside the Port.
- Motivated – You have a can-do attitude and a willingness to do what it takes to achieve goals. You are proactive in managing your work and strive to support your peers.
What else you need to know:
- Work Schedule – Your normal work schedule will be Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (40 hours per week). Slightly more flexible start and end times are available in this role.
- Work Environment – This work will take place in a hybrid remote/in-office setting at Management’s discretion and require work outdoors in all types of weather conditions. You may be exposed to areas of high noise, various hazardous materials, work at heights and/or in confined spaces.
- Washington State Residency Requirement – Employees must establish a residence in Washington state within 30 days of their first day of employment and must maintain a residence in Washington State during their employment with the Port of Seattle. If a position is eligible to telework, work performed while teleworking must be performed in Washington State.
- Grade Review – The pay range and grade for non-represented positions are under review and subject to change as part of the Port’s work to implement a new pay program. This review is intended to ensure that positions are aligned with the new program that will be implemented in early 2024.
- Security Requirements – As the successful candidate, you must obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC) within the first three months of employment.
- Safety Requirements – You will be required to comply with all work rules, safety, and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements.
