Come join our team! The Capitol Region Council of Governments is seeking a dynamic, and collaborative professional to join our Regional Planning and Development team as an Environmental Planner or Senior Environmental Planner.
This position will be responsible for a variety of planning tasks reporting to the Director of Regional Planning and Development or their designee. Tasks will include, but are not limited to: providing writing, planning, research, policy analysis, and data gathering on environmental and sustainability issues and resources; providing support for numerous CRCOG planning studies, including procurement, review of materials, coordination, graphic design, and community outreach; developing regional policy on environmental issues; and working with other staff members to help the Agency and municipalities complete a range of environmental planning initiatives and sustainability related projects.
The successful candidate will hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in a related field of study (Planning, Environment, Natural Resources, Sustainability, Geography, or related) or equivalent relevant experience. To be considered for the Senior level, the candidate’s education should be supplemented by a minimum of three years of relevant professional planning experience. An equivalent combination of training will be considered. For the Senior Environmental Planner, a master’s degree is preferred and would count as one year of professional planning experience.
The candidate should possess working knowledge of scientific principles and social factors underlying local, regional, and national environmental issues; general principles of planning, environmental planning, and environmental policies; and excellent computer skills, including the advanced use of word processing, spreadsheet, graphics, database, and other software.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong research, writing, and communication skills; ability to analyze various factors involved in environmental planning and policy; skill in preparing clear, accurate records and reports; ability to establish and maintain highly effective working relationships with fellow staff, managers, community members, business and municipal leaders, and others; capability to handle multiple projects simultaneously and to use good judgment in prioritizing work assignments; and the aptitude to work independently.
An understanding of some or more of the following environmental issues and
best practices is desired: solid waste and recycling, stormwater, drinking
water and sewer systems, brownfield remediation processes, low impact
development, climate, and natural hazard mitigation and resiliency strategies.

The current salary range is $55,171 – $71,722 for Environmental Planner (Grade 3) and $65,405 – $85,027 for Senior Planner (Grade 4). Starting salary will depend on qualifications.
