Reporting directly to the CES Director, the Director of Watershed Innovation is a key member of CES’s leadership team who will work to enhance the Center’s research mission on the Chester River, a tributary of the Chesapeake Bay, and comparable national and international watersheds. The Director will be responsible for creating, developing, and managing innovative and entrepreneurial science programs that can create effective solutions for real- world environmental problems. The intent is to incubate and grow ideas into marketable instruments, applications, and/or other tools that support sustainable development. Partnership with the College’s Makerspace is open. The Director should use this charge to link undergraduates, faculty, and staff at Washington College with NGOs, corporations, and government agencies through this initiative. There are a range of water related topics that are of interest and importance, such as but not limited to agricultural runoff, septic intrusion, degraded and restored aquatic habitats, sea level rise, extreme events, temperature rise, environmental justice, conservation, and development. Watershed monitoring and observation networks are at the center of the innovation program, with research questions that integrate the research expertise at CES into transdisciplinary initiatives at the water-land-food- climate nexus. Operation of bathymetry and river bottom profiling instrumentation such as side scan sonar, magnetometer, and sub-bottom profilers is desired. The Director of Watershed Innovation would have the opportunity to link to studies in physics (particularly around remote sensing), chemistry, earth sciences, engineering, and mathematical and computational sciences. Affiliation with appropriate department(s) would be negotiated on hire.
Washington College’s new strategic plan includes sustainability, inclusivity, and civic engagement as key pillars for operations and academics.
